It’s no secret that staying up to date with current events can feel like a chore. From the endless scroll of coronavirus news on Twitter, to a steady stream of ‘breaking’ notifications in your Facebook feed, it can be easy to switch off from news altogether. Yet, there’s a lot to keep up with – from Brexit negotiations and political divides in the US, to famine in Africa and escalating violence in the Middle East.
But there are ways to make it less overwhelming and more manageable – the key is to identify which media sources don’t work for you, then cut them out (or try blocking certain keywords if you find yourself doom-scrolling or getting stressed whilst browsing social media). Once you’ve weeded out the sources that don’t fit your needs, focus on finding one or two that do and make sure you use multiple news outlets so that you can see the different angles on stories.
Alternatively, try listening to a daily or weekly news podcast, which will be delivered right into your headphones so you can listen on the go (whether that’s on your walk to work, whilst cleaning or working out at the gym). It’s also worth signing up to news summaries from your preferred news outlet, which will condense major stories into a concise, digestible email so that you don’t have to spend a lot of time reading. You could even consider a news aggregator app which will gather a variety of different articles from your selected news sources in one place, allowing you to compare and contrast the different views on a story.
