The global flood crisis is an increasingly urgent challenge due to climate change. Extreme weather phenomena, such as heavy rain and increasing global temperatures, contribute to the increase in the frequency and intensity of floods experienced in various parts of the world. The impact of this flood is very significant on society, both from an economic, social and health perspective. First, the economic impact of the flood crisis is very large. Damaged infrastructure causes losses that can include billions of dollars. The agricultural sector, which is vulnerable to the impacts of flooding, faces significant losses in crop yields. For example, in 2020, floods in Bangladesh caused agricultural losses of around 200 million dollars, affecting farmers’ livelihoods and food security. In addition, local industries and businesses were also forced to close due to flooding, resulting in loss of jobs and community income. From a social perspective, floods bring major changes in community structure. The movement of people due to damage to their homes resulted in an increase in the number of refugees. In Indonesia, for example, thousands of people were forced to flee after major floods, causing the population to pile up in inadequate temporary shelters. This brings new challenges in terms of health services, education and access to other basic needs. Furthermore, the health aspect is also a serious concern. Floods can create a fertile environment for disease vectors, such as mosquitoes that cause dengue fever. In addition, contamination of water sources due to flooding can cause outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the long-term health impacts of flooding will be increasingly severe, especially in developing countries. Governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are trying to overcome this crisis. Mitigation and adaptation programs to climate change, such as building flood-resistant infrastructure and land conservation, are a priority. Public education about the importance of disaster preparedness is also sought to reduce vulnerability. Meanwhile, international efforts are also increasing. Agreements such as the Paris Agreement demonstrate a global commitment to tackling climate change. Investments in renewable energy technology, ecosystem restoration and reforestation are part of the strategy to reduce the impact of the flood crisis. Through collaboration between the government, international organizations and local communities, it is hoped that the impact of the flood crisis can be minimized. Preparedness, rapid response and effective recovery measures will be key in dealing with future global flood crises. Thus, strengthening community resilience to floods must be the main focus of the sustainable development agenda, creating a safer future for all.
