Recent Diplomatic Actions in the Middle East
Continuing conflict in the Middle East complicates global diplomatic efforts. Various countries and international organizations are trying to find peaceful solutions, especially regarding issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and the situation in Syria.
One of the latest initiatives came from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain, which strengthened their ties with Israel following the normalization of relations in 2020. In September 2023, the two countries discussed cooperation in technology and renewable energy. This meeting demonstrated the UAE and Bahrain’s commitment to strengthening their economies through strategic international relations.
On the other hand, Türkiye also plays an important role in diplomatic relations in the region. In a meeting in October, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan proposed further dialogue with Iran to reduce regional tensions. Türkiye hopes to improve trade relations with border villages which have been hampered by international sanctions.
Meanwhile, the United States continues to support peace missions in the Middle East. Under the leadership of President Joe Biden, the US is trying to facilitate talks between Israel and Palestine. In August 2023, a meeting was held in Washington to discuss concrete steps towards two states. It is hoped that the success of this conference will revive the peace process which has been stalled for years.
Not only that, the meeting between Arab and Israeli leaders at the Arab League Summit in September 2023 is also the focus of attention. At the summit, Arab leaders supported Palestine’s push for greater international recognition. This summit succeeded in producing a joint declaration stating full support for the two-state solution.
When it comes to the diplomatic future in the Middle East, the involvement of international organizations is vital. The European Union and the Arab League are two key actors in bringing together various interests. Collaboration between them can create an effective platform for mediating regional conflicts.
New trends in Middle East diplomacy show a desire to achieve stability through open dialogue. Countries such as Qatar and Kuwait are also trying to act as mediators in regional issues, creating a more conducive environment for bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Track-two diplomacy, involving civil society and academics, is also considered important as a way to bridge the gap between conflict parties.
In the midst of a global crisis, tensions in the Middle East remain in the international spotlight. Diplomatic efforts will continue, with the hope that cooperation between countries in the region can bring more lasting peace.
