A news feature is a nonfiction article that takes a deeper dive into a topic or issue. Often found in the main news or “A” section of a newspaper, a news feature blends soft writing styles and techniques with hard news reporting to capture reader attention and elicit emotion.
Unlike news stories, which focus on timeliness and report events as they happen, news features are more reflective and explore trends, patterns or significant issues using engaging storytelling. These articles can be much longer than news stories, ranging from short nibs to 5,000 words.
In the example below, NBC News explores the history of segregation in Detroit by using immersive and interactive visuals to tell the story of Black and White citizens who lived side-by-side but were denied homeownership due to redlining laws. By incorporating data, video and interviews with residents, the story provides context and perspective that allows readers to make their own conclusions.
Whether you are diving into a human-interest piece, unpacking a complex issue or telling a behind the scenes story, a good news feature article will grab and hold reader attention from start to finish.
